Boy Talks and Scouting Nights

Hello everyone,

Below you will see the charts we are using to track the membership efforts within the schools this year as we hope to recruit as many kids as possible into the scouting movement. I would like to ask each of you to take a look and see if there are any nights listed that you may be able to cover either a School night table or emcee a scouting fair at a school. I want to thank Joe LaFlame for volunteering to man Oliver Beach’s Back to School night table! I and the District greatly appreciate it!!! Also below is a general description of what we are looking for to be done at each event so that you know what you may be volunteering for. I want you all to know that all the resources you will need if you volunteer will be provided to you before the event. If you decide to help you can contact me or Stella Martin ( and let us know. Thanks again and take care!!!

Manning a School night table:

Manning a table at a school’s Back to School night is very easy. All the resources will be provided to you. All you need to do is show up a few minutes early to set up your table and simply greet people and talk to those who are interested about the opportunities throughout the district to get involved in Scouting. We are asking those who take these rolls to be as non-biased as possible. We are not promoting any single unit at these events, we are promoting scouting and giving parents and kids the information needed to get involved. The flyers that will be handed out that night will have information regarding every Cub Scout Pack in the District as well as a notice on the front directing them to that school’s Scouting Fair at a later date. Our goal is to get the parents and kids interested to the Scouting Fair where local Packs will have Displays set up and will be prepared to talk about each of their units.

Emceeing a Scouting Fair:

Emceeing a Scouting Fair is also easy. This requires you to stand in front of a group of parents that came back because of a flyer they received through the school system and talking to them about what scouting can do for their boys and their family. The basic Scouting Fair will start with the District volunteer talking before the crowd and explaining the application form, talking to them about what scouting has to offer them and their boys and getting them excited about the possibility. At that point the Emcee will tell everyone that they (the Emcee) will be at the door if they (the parent) find a pack they want to join and will take their application and fees so that their son can be registered. Our goal is to not have people leaving with applications saying that they will fill it out later. Once they leave, the chances of them actually filling out the application and joining scouting is rare. I am willing to meet and talk with anyone who may have questions regarding emceeing a Scouting Fair.
